And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming

Daddy does a late night burping session.

Z sleeps GREAT at night, still.  He went to bed at 10:00 last night and woke up at 2:00, 4:30, 5:30, and 7:00.  Okay, that actually doesn't sound so good.  But at night, he wakes up, eats, and that's pretty much it.  Right back down, with few exceptions.  So really, he slept with small interruptions until about 9:00 a.m. today.

The only tough thing is that after the 7:00 a.m. feeding, he wants to be nestled up close to me, asleep right on the boob.  Nothing else will do.  We can stealthily transfer him to crib or bassinet at all other times.  But early mornings, he must be near Mommy.  This has been fairly consistent of late.  I tried four times this morning to get him in the bassinet.  He would not be fooled.

So I took him to the couch and watched CNN over his snuggliness.  He'll only be eight weeks old once, after all.

Oona would go down at 9pm, but then wake at 3am for a nursing. I kept her in bed with me from 3am til whenever we woke up. We did that until she was 3 years old! But I still cherish those times. She was a snugglebug!!

DCD, that's tragic.

Jeannette, yeah, I am so conflicted about keeping the babe next to me. I've fallen asleep with him on the couch a few times, which is extremely ill advised. Even the biggest co sleeping wackadoodles would tell you not to do that. But he stays so still when he's next to me, and he's soooo peaceful. And well, I'm exhausted. And it never lasts long--I can't really sleep soundly that way because I'm concerned about safety. I'm thinking of putting this futon mattress down on the floor of his room, so we can nap together safely. Our bed is a pillow top, and it's high, and there's a bedframe--it's basically a baby trap and we can't co sleep there at all.

A couple of things I did:

1. put rolled up towels on either side of Z, so he can't roll over and off the bed.

2. place some chairs so their back is against the side of the bed.

3. just get a bed rail. i found one at a garage sale that i used on my bed and then also on Jonah's bed when he moved out of the crib.

4. futon on the floor sounds like the best idea. Then you don't worry at all.

But I think it's OK to sleep with him at least a little bit. Just not every single time. I think the point is to keep him from developing a one and only one way he will sleep so then you have to do it that way. As long as he's versitle, there's no problem with sleeping with him every now and then. Or even every day, naptime or whatever. If it gets to be a problem you can adjust. We still have what we call 'special night' where the kids get to sleep with us. I even look forward to it. but I like being able to go to sleep on my own too.

Took him to the futon this morning when he wouldn't go down after nursing. It was great. I just love, love, love having him next to me. It's the best.

I think you're right about not doing it just one way, though. Just now, before coming over to the computer to do some writing (read blogging), I just nursed him to sleep, but then I had to wake him up to change his diaper. And I'm not in the mood to cuddle with him now. I have stuff to do. So I swaddled him and put him in the bassinet, eyes open. And he went down without even needing a pacifier! I'm so proud.
